Hong Kong South East Asia Dance Troupe

Introduction

The Hong Kong South East Asia Dance Troupe was established by Surianty Liu Chun Wai and others in 1980, and registered as a non-profit-making society in 1985 with the objective to promote and develop Southeast Asian dance. It endeavours to explore, study, collate and adapt the rich resources of the dances. It feedbacks to the South East Asia origins by recreating works that incorporate innovative forms of expression while lifting the art to a new level and contributing back to the society. The troupe traveled many times to Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia for dance performance. Apart from being active in the stage, the troupe spares no efforts in world peace and charity work. The Troupe has regularly participated in public activities, invited and sponsored by the Indonesian Consulate, Malaysian Tourism Board, Government and Local organizations. In October 2001, Guruh Sukarno Putra, son of the first President of Indonesia, was invited to join up with the Troupe in performances at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre theatre. In 2008, the troupe and Legacy European Folk Dance Troupe joinly organized two charity fund-raising dance performances for the ECSAF – End Child Sexual Abuse Foundation in Hong Kong City Hall. In 2009, the troupe joined the Indonesian delegation in the performance at the Shenyang International Tourism Festival. In 2010, it once again traveled to West Malaysia for charity fund-raising performance to support the Local Chinese Independent secondary schools and church. Over the years this dance company with a distinctive style has taken shape, with its members gaining experience through practice and a number of creative works to its credit.
