Description

Finding the Rat from Fifteen Strings of Cash

You Hulu, the butcher, borrows fifteen strings of copper coins. He is robbed and murdered by gambler Lou A’shu (Rat) in the same night. Neighbours are suspicious that Su Shujuan, You’s daughter, is the murderer. They report her to the local government. Coincidentally, Shujuan is hanging out with her friend Xiong Youlan. Both are arrested, put on trial and sentenced to death by an overly stringent county magistrate. Execution supervisor and the Prefect of Suzhou Kuang Zhong is doubtful of the case. He personally investigates the crime scene and puts on the disguise as a fortune-teller to pursue the real culprit. He runs into A’shu outside of the City God Temple, and gains his trust by giving A’shu a reading. He obtains a confession and rectifies the wrongly trialled case.

Kneeling by the Pond from Roaring of the Ferocious Wife

The Prefect of Huangzhou Chen Jichang is always afraid of his wife. Yet, at the invitation of Su Dongpo, he goes to the Orchid Pavilion to enjoy the snowy views and meets Su’s cousin Qincao. Betraying his wife, Chen pledges his love to Qincao with a jade coin as an engagement token. The affair is discovered by Liu Yu’e, Chen’s jealous wife. Chen is reproached under Liu’s rosewood stick. He is punished to kneel by the pond and confess his wrongdoing.

The Hunt from War and Never-ending Love

She Hong (the garrison leader of Shetang Pass) and Yang Gun (chief of Fiery Mountains of Linzhou) become enemies when a corrupt minister, Cui Yinglong, instigates misunderstandings between them. Yang subsequently reaches out to make amends and the two reconcile. The two families go to hunt in the mountains. Yang’s son Jiye and She’s daughter Saihua appreciate each other’s talents and fall in love. Yang Gun proposes on behalf of his son and asks for She Hong’s blessing.

Under the Umbrella from The Moon Pavilion

Jiang Shilong loses his younger sister Ruilian as he is running away. Shilong calls out for his sister, but mistakenly attracts the response of Ruilan, the daughter of Wang Zhen, the Minister of Defence. The two meet and tell each other their stories as they walk on as companions. Sharing the same umbrella in the rain, Ruilan gives Shilong a golden hairpin as a token of love and the two become secretly engaged.
