The etymological origin for the Chinese word \u201cfo2 bun6\u201d (\u4f19\u4f34), or \u201cpartner\u201d, traces back to the ancient military system. While \u201cfo2\u201d ( \u706b ) refers to a unit of ten militants, it also doubles to mean \u201cfire\u201d. Indeed, the military was organised by the fire \u2013 the leader of a unit, \u201cfo2 zoeng2\u201d ( \u706b\u9577 , literally meaning \u201c chief of the fire\u201d), was in charge of cooking all meals which the team would share together. Therefore, those within one \u201cfo2\u201d were called \u201cfo2 bun6\u201d ( \u706b\u4f34 ), or \u201cpartners of fire”. This word was later adapted to generally mean “partners” ( \u540c\u4f34 ) and was developed to be written as “\u4f19\u4f34\u201d (fo2 bun6). Now, it refers to people who collaborate as part of the same organisation or activity, sharing the same practices and experiences.<\/p>\n
