Warlikowski, having directed several Shakespeare\u2019s plays, is known for his modern interpretation of traditional texts. In African Tales, he uses his particular adaptation technique, juxtaposing and mixing fragments of different plays through which a unique screenplay emerges. King Lear, The Merchant of Venice and Othello depict three Shakeaspearian heroes who impersonate the figures of today\u2019s exclusion, being victims of ageism, antisemitism and racism. Warlikowski also lets the usually silent female characters speak, making them deliver monologues especially written for the play by Lebanese poet and playwright Wajdi Mouawad.
