Ubu
Description
Description
“Ubu” is written by the French playwright Alfred Jarry. It was first performed in Paris on December 10, 1896. He was deeply influenced by aestheticism and symbolism. “Ubu” repudiates traditional dramatic forms and concepts and eschews the growing trend in naturalism on stage in the period.
“Ubu” is a kind of parody of classical drama and specifically of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Hamlet and King Lear. In the play, Ubu Père leads a revolution, and kills the King of Poland and his sons. Thereafter, the Queen of Poland is being chased to be killed, but Prince Buggerlas escapes. The ghost of the dead king calls for revenge. Ubu Père becomes a tyrant and he confiscates the assets from the nobles and populace and kills them ridiculously. Whilst on the other hand, Captain Brubbish who is betrayed by Ubu Père flees to Russia and persuades the Tzar to declare war on Ubu Père.
When Ubu Père is out to confront the invading Russians, his wife, Ubu Mère, tries to steal money that he has stashed in the palace. However, Bougrelas leads a revolt of the people against Ubu Père and Ubu Mère but is forced to flee. Ubu Père defeats the Russians and meets Ubu Mère in a cave…
