“When Swallows Return”

“When the swallows return, I will be back.” That’s the promise left by General Ngai Kim-wan when he leave his pregnant wife Bak Lei-heung. He is on a mission to ask for military support from the Eastern Qi in order to liberate his country. Princess San-wu of the Eastern Qi has a crush on Kim-wan and forces him to be her husband in exchange for the support. Kim-wan refuses, stating he has a wife already. So the princess sends assassin to kill his wife and child. Will they be able to escape the danger? Can Kim-wan finally liberate his country?

“The Eternal Peony”

On New Year’s Eve, Lee Hon-yi tells the flower girl Shum Gok-heong that she will be rich and famous. Later, when Gok-heong is cheating Princess Gwai Yim-seong, Prince Gwai Sau-ling spots her and offers her the opportunity to learn to sing and dance with Sanniang at the institution. Meanwhile, Hon-yi is not only given some money by Cuihuan to assist his study, but also admired by Yim-seong. Ignorant of the fact that Gok-heong is his benefactor, he insults Gok-heong by showing off his wealth at the institution. Though they have all the misunderstandings cleared afterwards, Sau-ling comes for Gok-heong with betrothal gifts.

Sau-ling compels Gok-heong to marry him. Besides sending Hon-yi to Suzhou under escort, he further instructs his student Tsz Po-tung to harm Hon-yi. However, Servant Ng Chong-yong, who writes the letter for Sau-ling, is barely literate and makes many mistakes. Thus, Po-tung mistakes Gok-heong as Sau-ling’s foster daughter; and in order to suck up to Sau-ling, he asks Gok-heong to be his sworn sister and even presides over the wedding for her and Hon-yi. Shocked at seeing Hon-yi and Gok-heong come back as newlywed, Sau-ling finally realizes the mistakes Chong-yong has made. Quoting Gok-heong’s poem, that is however a satirical one, on praising Du Juanhong, Chong-yong persuades Sau-ling to marry her instead. Sau-ling is outraged when he finds out that Juanhong is in fact very ugly

“Reunion at Rouge Alley”

In order to gain more political power, director of the Music Conservatory, Zo Hao-yu sends sister of the musician Shum Tong-hin to the imperial palace, and forces the renowned songstress Koo Chuk-hing to marry him. Determined to report Hao-yu’s misconduct to the prime minister, Tong hin advises Chuk-hing to seek help from the minister’s fifth daughter, Song Yuk-lan, who gets the wicked to be punished by her father.
Winning Yuk-lan’s heart with his talent, Tong-hin is invited to tutor Prime Minister Sung Chong- 4 man’s sixth son, Song Man-man. To revenge on Yuk-lan, Hao-yu accuses her of seducing the residential tutor during the prime minister’s birthday celebration. Enraged, Sung Chong-man disowns Yuk-lan for her immoral act. While his money is stolen by Chuk-hing out of jealousy, Tong-hin leaves the examination so as to secure Man-man’s first place. Yuk-lan misses the chance to meet Tong-hin. Thus, under the help from Hao-yu, she has stayed at Rouge Alley for six years, waiting for her lover to return.
Finding her lover a beggar now and knowing her brother the first place at the imperial examination, Yuk-lan’s illness is worsened due to surprise and sadness. Chuk-hing regrets that she returns the money to Tong-hin. Tong-hin’s sister wins the Emperor’s favour and brings glory to the family. After Man-man explains to his sister Tong-hin’s intention, the couple is finally happily reunited.

“Princess Cheungping”

It is an age of chaos in the dusk of the Ming dynasty with all the rebels and invaders. Knowing the fall of the empire is inevitable, the Sung Zing Emperor slays his wives and daughters for the sake of their dignity. Princess Cheung-ping toughs through it, and hides herself in a nunnery, hoping to live in seclusion thereafter. But the royal son-in-law, Chow Sai-hin happens to find her in the nunnery. Sai-hin convinces Cheung-ping to fake surrender to the Qing court in exchange for the release of her brother and a proper burial for her father. After all is set and done, the two of them get married under a camphor tree and drink poison wine to sacrifice for their country.

“Contending for the Bride”

At Chinese New Year Eve, Guai Nam-ping and Yu Kit-jing fall in love at first sight after Nam-ping rescues Kit-jing and her maid from Cho Tit-ho’s molestation. However, when Nam-ping sees Kit jing’s father, Yu Yao-choi, collecting debts from the poor, he beats him up and forces him to tear the IOUs into pieces so as to teach him a lesson. With this grudge and the prejudice against Nam ping and for his father’s shabby clothes, Yao-choi breaks off the engagement that was made before Nam-ping and Kit-jing’s birth. He further agrees to marry Kit-jing to Tit-ho. Yao-choi finds that Nam-ping meets Kit-jing in secret and declares against their marriage unless Nam-ping can present a betrothal gift which matches his wealth. Nam-ping comes earlier than Tit-ho for the bride but is expelled on the accusation of embezzling. Unwilling to marry Tit-ho,
Kit-jing disguises herself as the bridesmaid and has Kit-bing be the bride when Tit-ho comes. Her plan fails and the parties take the case to court.
With his powerful status, Tit-ho compels Bat Sau-fat to find Nam-ping guilty and forces Kit-jing to be his wife. Luckily, Nam-ping’ s father arrives with the imperial edict and reprimands Tit-ho and Yu’ s father. Finally, Nam-ping and Kit-jing become a couple as they were engaged before their birth. The story comes to a happy ending.
