Cantonese Opera Demonstration Performance by Hong Kong Young Talent Cantonese Opera Troupe
The Hong Kong Young Talent Cantonese Opera Troupe aims to provide systematic training and performance opportunities for talented local young people to improve their artistic skills, guiding them to become the inheritors who help preserve and rejuvenate this traditional art form.
The programme is in three parts. First is a performance of an excerpt of a Wen (civil) opera The Purple Hairpin and a Wu (martial) opera Lo Faa Dong. Participants are immersed in the roles and will quickly grasp the features of Cantonese opera. The second part consists of a lecture and demonstration by an instructor from the troupe. The students will be taught the Cantonese opera hand gestures, such as riding a horse, crossing a bridge, as well as Mandarin pronunciation for Cantonese opera. The third part is an interactive session for the students to practice simple hand gestures and Mandarin on stage.

“Applauding A Cappella” by Sound Of Singers
Sound Of Singers, formed in 2013, is a local professional vocal group that specialises in a cappella singing and backup singing for artist. It was founded by Jo Jo Pang, one of the most influential a cappella artists in China. It hopes to add fun and taste to the everyday life of the audience, and to bring them endless joy.
Applauding A Cappella is a concert presented primarily in a cappella singing. Artists will be performing original and cover songs. Some of the original music do not have lyrics – different voicing is used to highlight the characteristics and techniques of a cappella singing. The cover versions comprise pop music that the younger generation is fond of, including Cantonese pop song, Pharrell Williams’s Happy, Big Bang’s Bang Bang Bang, etc.
To enhance students’ understanding about a cappella music, the group will explain the origin, types and arrangement of a cappella singing. Techniques of vocal harmony and beatboxing will also be taught.

String Concert “Serenade” by the Music Office
In Western music, serenades have been a music genre through which lovers express love for each other. What a tender and romantic scene to have a lover leaning against the window, sending love messages to the beloved through touching melodies played softly beneath the glistening starry sky with bright moonlight. Serenades are a genre widely popular among composers, which are distinguished by their sweet melodies and rich harmonisation. This concert features European serenades of different periods, providing an opportunity for students to savour the distinctive European culture and the tenderness of Europeans.

Chinese Music Concert “Animal Farm” by the Music Office
Quite a lot of musical works, be they Chinese or foreign, in modern or ancient times, centre on the theme of animals. Some depict their appearance while some imitate their sounds. Some portray a specific kind of animals while some relate to different kinds of animals. Apart from introducing to students various musical instruments commonly used in contemporary Chinese orchestral music, this concert showcases a selection of repertoire of Chinese music on the theme of commonplace farm animals. Let’s take a look at their appearance and listen to their sounds from a new perspective – the perspective of music!

Experience the story behind Vivaldi’s most famous works as the music is magically woven into a dramatic narrative of Vivaldi’s life. The programme includes the Four Seasons, Nulla in mundo pax sincera and concertos for the mandolin, bassoon and viola d’amore.

“Demonstrate self-control and follow propriety” (2017) by Pop Theatre
Pop Theatre was founded by its artistic director Chan Wing-chuen in 2002. The company infuses the truth, benevolence and beauty of the theatre into the public’s everyday life. By staging different productions in schools and communities, it aims to actively promote the development of local theatrical art.
The programme themes around the story of “Yan Yuan asked about perfect virtue” in The Analects of Confucius, the Chinese classic of Confucianism. A family that is originally not particularly virtuous becomes enlightened and changes into one that cherishes the virtue of giving. The drama incorporates elements of moral education. During the performance and interaction session, students are invited to stand in the shoes of the characters and synchronise with the dilemmas faced by the actors. The process encourages them to contemplate and understand about the wisdom of being virtuous, as well as the way to treat others well. The perfect virtue of “to subdue one’s self and return to propriety” is passed on.
