Beyond Time
U-Theatre, led by Artistic Director Liu Ruo-yu and Music Director Huang Chih-chun, draws on the inner truths of “dance/non-dance” and “one-stroke drumming” through restrained movements and impeccable percussion technique. Thunderous drumming is merged with swirling, contemplative dance and nomad singer Wang Cheng’s elemental chanting, while renowned stage and lighting designer Lin Keh-hua turns the floor into a sea of light that stunningly reflects the performers. Together, these elements combine to create scenes that lie between the real and the virtual, creating a fourth dimension in the theatre and a new form of spiritual awakening for the senses.

Two Dogs
A hybrid of Italian commedia dell’arte and traditional Chinese comedy, “Two Dogs” has been put together by an innovative young team of theatre and music enthusiasts. It is also the coolest, most challenging work yet from Meng Jinghui, a leading National Theatre of China director. Critically acclaimed, the show centres on two dogs that flee their village homes to pursue happiness and fulfilment in a city but are subsequently hit by reality.
As it is based on the most current social issues, such as fake Louis Vuitton goods, fake eggs, tainted milk powder, financial crises and more, the content delivered by the talented cast of improvisational artists is often subject to change. The result is a hilarious yet thought-provoking production that draws attention to and reflects on attitudes of modern life.

O You Heavenly Creatures !
In classical Chinese literature, characters only find a way to redress injustice in the afterlife. Why should this be so? In this absorbing tale of a secular city shifting between tradition and modern life, memory and actuality, a resurrected Monkey King encounters seven incarnations of the innocent Lee Wai-leung. Together, they lodge an appeal to Heaven.
O You Heavenly Creatures! is a parable that brings together the Monkey King of Journey to the West fame, Lee Wai-leung the tragic heroine from a story in Chinese opera, and her seven modern-day incarnations–female workers who jumped from the building of Foxconn–and explores times past and present, lives as the characters lived within their timeframes, and the ethical and cultural conundrums behind them all. The social outcry of modern experimental theatre is merged with Chinese traditional theatre aesthetics. Like all parables, the quotable quote is “For every one of us, there is a Foxconn, a factory in which we live. The difference is whether you are aware of the character you play.”
