Seaweed Sunrise

In Seaweed Sunrise, Super Future Kid presents a new series of paintings and sculpture exploring this emotional landscape across unconventional dimensions. Like dreams, the works present a distant euphoric time. The artist positions her work between sculpture and paintings, often presenting them together, physically depicting a new dimension for the viewer and subject itself. The artist’s newest works are laced in fluorescent hues, as characters brave new territory, gracefully capturing their pains and hopes in our ever-changing world. The works reflect the tensions and deep uncertainty of the current environment. As the artist found herself constantly torn between the leisurely new pace of the world and its newly imposed restrictions, she sought to replicate this emotional balancing act with her subjects who grapple with the boredom and freedom of too much leisure, escaping the mundane to imaginary new dimensions. The works leave the viewer with a strange sense that something is not quite right, yet they don’t rule out the possibility of hope or happy endings. Seaweed Sunrise draws upon the symbolism of a new day, and a chance for something good to happen with each new beginning.

Mega Seoul 4 Decades presents the photographs of capital Seoul for 4 decades (the late 1960s~the early 2010s) through perspectives of 12 Korean photographers.

The group encompasses elder, middle and rising photographers who are still active in the firm of Korean contemporary photography with different ages and backgrounds. They have captured the Seoul city in repeated vortex of collision and construction. The huge city, where different trends co-exist, is exposed by each generation’s distinctive perspective. It is from the late 60s, when everything headed to Seoul while people were singing the “Hymn of Seoul” until the present, when the city blew up to a global mega city.

Although the photographers gave themselves into numerous changes and dissonances of the city, they show arduous photographic progress to reveal the inside facts and the hidden side of “Hymn of Seoul” responding with sharp and ironic perspective or remain aloof to the contradictory city.

In this exhibition, audiences can experience the documentary of the old Seoul that vanished too many and too fast, and the city’s absurdity. This exhibition seeks to explore viewpoints that can be shared between Hong Kong and other modern mega places which has historical and cultural similarities with Seoul. And also expects to become a positive opportunity to show various Korean photography, and to pave the way for cultural exchanges between South Korea and Hong Kong.

Violent and explosive——this is what we have always imagined the end of the world to be. However, after this catastrophic year, we have learnt that nothing in life is predictable, including in what way everything ends. In an era like this, indeterminacy has become a major fear shared by the entire human race.

Always mesmerised by the complementary and magical power brought about by the combination of words and visual images in touching human soul, the_ blanks has invited the young Hong Kong-based photographer TSZ, whose work beautifully yet effortlessly captures the inner struggles of young people, to join hands with us and create this dialogue on the end of the world between photographs and words.
