Hong Kong Art Chorus

Introduction

The Hong Kong Arts Chorus was established in 1987 to nurture fine musicians under the renowned vocal expert Cheng Hon Shing. The mission of the Chorus is to perform and perfect Chinese art and culture.

The Chorus’ motto is “Dedication towards the ideals of the arts, instead of centering on one self through the arts” – the philosophy of the famous theater maestro Stanislavsky. In the twenty-eight years since its inauguration, the Chorus has amassed 100 members, comprising teachers, students and professionals, who also run the Chorus on a voluntary basis.

Members of the Chorus are all music lovers, many of whom have no previous musical training. Mr. Cheng utilizes his expertise and experience in vocal studies, especially on vocal production and music realization, to train members. As a result, the Chorus is now capable of interpreting music with true feelings and has grown artistically.

The Chorus has performed in the Hong Kong City Hall and the Hong Kong Cultural Centre since 1995. Its repertoire includes outstanding songs of both the East and the West, from the 30’s to 60’s, and has been critically acclaimed.

The Chorus is now planning future performances, promoting Chinese culture through programs of Chinese folk songs.
