Yasi * We Friend – A Cross- Media Response Exhibition To Leung Ping Kwan

Description

Description

Leung Ping Kwan (1949 – 2013) was one of the most celebrated men of letters in Hong Kong. Writing mainly in the Chinese language under his pen name Yasi, he was a prolific poet, novelist, essayist, translator, researcher, teacher, scholar, as well as literary, film and cultural critic, photographer and videographer, whose work traversed back and forth comfortably across different media, and geographic and cultural borders. Known as PK to his many friends, his Cantonese language pen name Yasi best describes the spirit behind his work: both Chinese characters, Ya and Si, are what could be described as discourse devices, without any specific meaning. They carry no ideological undertones, nor are they limited by any preconceived ideas or beliefs, much like Leung Ping Kwan the man himself.

In his vision of this exhibition, literature did not rest between the pages of texts, instead it was alive; literature was a part of his dialogue with life — a life full to the brim with not only words or poems, but with images, music, sculpture, photos, dance…

In the exhibition, Journeys of Leung Ping Kwan, more than one hundred works of art, featuring Yasi and his collaborators, will be on display at the Central Library. In Orhan Pamuk’s Museum of Innocence, the protagonist Kemal collected objects that enabled him to feel the presence of his woman, Füsun. Likewise, visitors to the Central Library will find exhibits imbued with memories of Yasi the writer and poet, and Yasi the creative artist in dialogue with his friends through their collaborations. These pieces are at once real and symbolic of his creative journey from the east to the west and then back again. At the Fringe Club, another exhibition in his memory, Yasi * We Friend – A Cross-Media Response Exhibition to Leung Ping Kwan, comprises works by his friends, students and readers as dedications and responses.

‘Leung Ping Kwan (1949 – 2013), a Retrospective’ is a series of activities arousing public interest in Hong Kong writers, literature and poetry. This program consists of exhibition, poetry recital, poetry reading, literary talk, and creative poetry workshop.
