“United Colors of Wind” 2016 Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band Annual Concert

Description

Description

The Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band (HKYSB) of the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will showcase an array of wonderful works in its annual concert, entitled “United Colors of Wind”, at 7.30pm on May 2 (Monday) at the Concert Hall of Hong Kong City Hall.

The Conductor of the Hong Kong Wind Symphony and the Singapore International School Western Orchestra, Dr Koh Chee-kang, will be the guest conductor to lead the HKYSB to perform Benjamin Yeo’s “Legend of the Ancient Hero”.

Another guest conductor, John Cheng, will lead the HKYSB to perform Elgar’s “Excerpt from Pomp and Circumstance Marches, No. 1”. In addition, guest performers from Kowloon Bay St John the Baptist Catholic Primary School, Notre Dame College and the Hong Kong Children’s Symphonic Band will join the HKYSB to perform fabulous band repertoire with chorus and sign language interpretation including “Let It Go” from the popular animated Walt Disney film “Frozen”; “A Little Candlelight”, arranged by Yau Yuen-hing; and the children’s music piece “It’s a Small World”.

Under the batons of Music Office instructors Pak Wing-heng and Chan Pui-ling, 80 young musicians will perform various band music pieces including John McCord’s “Bells”, Bert Appermont’s “In the Shadow of Napoleon”, Scott McAllister’s “Freebirds” and Philippe Geiss’ “United Colors of Saxophones”.

The HKYSB was formed in 1978 with the aim of nurturing young musicians and arousing greater interest in symphonic music in Hong Kong. The band currently has 80 members aged 12 to 25 and recruits annually by open audition. It has performed in Hong Kong and overseas, winning much acclaim.
