The Wedding of Cheng Yaojin

Description

Description

Rebellions are frequent during the last few years of the Sui dynasty. Cheng Yaojin, the leader of the anti-government army of Wagang Stockade is defeated many times because the Sui general Pei Yuanqiang is too skillful in warfare. Cheng therefore takes the advice of his military advisor Xu Maogong and forged the writing of Pei Renji, the father of Pei Yuanqing. In the faked family letter, Cheng tried to deceive the mother of Pei Yuanqiang and her daughter Pei Cuiyun into visiting the mountains. In the letter, it is also written that Pei Cuiyun would be married to Cheng Yaojin. Madam Pei is not aware that the letter is a set up. When she sees the good looks of the messenger, she believes that Cheng Yaojin must also be a handsome person. She therefore personally sends off her daughter to the mountains to marry Cheng. On the wedding night, Pei Cuiyun finds out that Cheng Yaojin has the least attractive looks and that she has been deceived. Cheng Yaojin tells her candidly about why he becomes rebellious and why he wants her to meet him. Pei Cuiyun is touched by Cheng’s honesty. After Cheng has been tested on his scholastic learning and military skills, the two become husband and wife. Pei Yuanqing goes to the mountains with his father and surrenders to Wagang Stockade, and everyone joins the anti-government army.
