The Judge Goes To Pieces – A New Adaptation
Description
Description
A woman, Madam Tian, eyes the family fortune and schemes with her husband to have Yang Xiuzhen’s husband killed. Xiuzhen escapes from home to seek help from her brother, but he sells her to Yang Chun. Yang pities her plight and helps her run. Xiuzhen is pregnant and, when she reaches a tea stand run by Song Shijie, Song’s wife comes to her rescue and takes her home. Song, who has retired from a minor legal practitioner, runs an inn and a tea stand, is urged by his wife to help reinstate Xiuzhen. After much pondering, he makes Xiuzhen his sworn sister, then writes a petition on her behalf. Although Prefect Gu Du accepts the case, his wife accepts the bribe of three hundred taels of silver from Tian Neng. Gu is caught in a dilemma, and he decides to incriminate Xiuzhen. Shijie is totally unfazed. Yang Chun stops the procession of High Commissioner Miu Peng to plea on Xiuzhen’s behalf. On hearing that, Miu orders to reopen the case. Shijie, who has the confidence of one who knows truth is on his side, gives scathing defence as well as accusations at the court attended by four titled scholars.
