The Cherry Orchard
Theatre

Description
Description
Anton Chekhov’s last and finest work, in his final critique on the society
In the merciless progression of time and history, an end may also be a beginning
End of the 19th century. Russia. A cherry orchard.
Its owner is a woman who lost her love and her wealth, after sailing across the sea and travelling afar for her lover. Debt collectors are waiting at the door when she returns home. Left without choices, she sells her orchard and leaves dejectedly as the axes fall and the cherry trees are cut down. As the middle class gains power and the slaves are freed, should the aristocrats resign themselves to accepting the changes in society, or should they resist? Do they stay or do they leave?
The production is directed by Ceri Sherlock, Dean of Drama of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, leading Hong Kong Repertory’s performers to deliver a powerful drama interwoven with sorrow and humour.
