BERGViolin Concerto
SCHUBERT Symphony no. 9, Great
Robert Schumann said he was “in seventh heaven” after hearing Schubert’s Ninth Symphony, rightly subtitled “Great,” from its majestic opening horn call to the finale that salutes Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.” Maestro Jaap van Zweden is joined by Renaud Capuçon in Alban Berg’s affecting Violin Concerto, inscribed “To the Memory of an Angel”—Alma Mahler’s beautiful daughter Manon, felled by polio when she was just 18. At its emotional heart Berg quotes from Bach’s Cantata, “It is enough,” and, after a shattering climax, the work ends serenely on an ethereal high G.
