Nanyin (Cantonese naamyam) is a traditional form of Cantonese narrative singing that gained popularity in the early 20th century and was recently recognised as part of Hong Kong’s intangible cultural heritage.
In 1975, a recording was made of a live tea house performance by one of Hong Kong’s most renowned nanyin artists, the blind singer Dou Wun (1910–1979). In collaboration with the Ho Iu Kwong Charity Foundation, the Centre for Chinese Music Studies at The Chinese University of Hong Kong has now published this recording “Revenge in Guang Chang Long”, preserving and sharing Dou’s voice and the atmosphere of the traditional singing environment.
On 2 March, to mark the launch of the CD and pay tribute to nanyin master Dou, the Centre for Chinese Music Studies presents a concert of traditional nanyin music. Participating artists include Yuen Siu-fai, Andrew Chan Chi-fai, John Chan Cho-chak, Elly Leung Hoi-lei, Man Wah, Fung Ling-jo, Ko Yun-hung, Tang Kwan, Lo Wai-kwok, Yu Siu-wah, Ho Kang-ming, Chan Kwok-fai, Yuen Yan-pai and The Gong Strikes One.
