Plucking the Tassels
General Tang Jiao and Xu Yuji are in love, but the King of Chu to take her as his concubine. Unable to disobey the King’s orders, Yuji pretends to be unfaithful to Jiao so he would give up on her. Later, the Jin army attacks the Chu camp with fire, Yuji seeks Jiao for help. Finally, Jiao rescues Yuji but dies in her arms from a fatal arrow wound.

Dou Er and Changzong is a loving couple. Changzong travels to the capital to take the imperial examination. Their neighbor Zhang, who has long coveted Dou for her beauty, tries to kill Dou’s mother-in-law, Cai, by giving her poisoned soup, mistakenly kills his own mother. To bear the torture for Cai, Dou replaces Cai and is sentenced to death. On the day of her execution, in the middle of summer, an amazingly heavy snow descends.
The Headstrong Husband and His Resourceful Wife
Hong Tianbao marries General Ge Daixiong’s daughter, Jingniang. Jingniang discovers her father intends to manipulate her husband in order to stage a coup, so she pretends she no longer loves Tianbao to drive him away. On his way home Tianbao saves the king and as a result is knighted and granted a domain. Following this the couple reunite.
