Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia – Roma
Description
Description
Founded in 1908, the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia – Roma is the first orchestra in Italy to devote itself exclusively to the symphonic repertoire. It has collaborated with legendary composers and conductors over a century, from Mahler, Debussy, Toscanini, and Bernstein, to today’s Myung-whun Chung, Valery Gergiev, and Gustavo Dudamel, among others. The orchestra has also given premieres of contemporary works, and some of which have become classics, such as Respighi’s Fountains of Rome and Pines of Rome.
Led by their charismatic music director Sir Antonio Pappano, born in London to Italian parents, who has been regarded as one of the most dynamic conductors in today’s Europe, the orchestra will collaborate with two vibrant pianists offering two consecutive concerts of spectacular music.
The first concert, an all-Russian programme, presents Glinka’s Overture to Ruslan and Lyudmila, Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony, and Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto, with Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov, winner of Gramophone’ s 2016 Artist of the Year Award, will be the soloist.
The second concert, an all-Beethoven programme, embraces the energy and whirling joy of the composer’s Second and Seventh symphonies, and pianist Seong-Jin Cho from Seoul, winner of the 2015 Chopin International Piano Competition, will be the soloist of the virtuosic Third Piano Concerto.
