Music for Life ─ The Legend of the Great Master Tong Leung-tak – String and Wind Ensemble Concert in Tribute to the Great Master Tong Leung-tak

Description

Description

Composer, conductor and educationist, the famous erhu maestro, Tong Leung-tak (1938 – 2010) was a leading light of his generation in Chinese music.

2018 marks the 80th anniversary of Maestro Tong’s birth. For the two upcoming concerts, the programme is carefully handpicked to include the most representative music in erhu, including the string-and-wind ensemble repertoire for which the Tang’s Family Ensemble of Shanghai is most famous, tantamount to an heirloom of the family. The Tang’s and several other famous virtuosi in this musical genre are coming to Hong Kong to meet up with the former students of Maestro Tong to present a musical feast for Hong Kong audiences. On 25 May, the programme includes music compositions and arrangements that dotted the artistic career of the Maestro, such as Zhonghua Liuban, Hua-San-Liu, Remembering an Old Friend and On the Grassland.

On 27 May, former winners of the First Shanghai Spring Music Festival – Shen Fengquan and Lu Rirong and their second-generation mentees – Shen Duomi, Zhao Jianhua, Liu Guangyu, Hou Shih-Chieh, Niu Miaomiao and Chen Jun, will join together with the renowned conductor who is also friend of Maestro Tong – Qu Chunquan. They will be appearing together with the joint orchestra of the Hong Kong Chinese Instrumental Music Association which is made up of all the major Chinese orchestras in Hong Kong. They will perform several classics and perennial audience favourite such as Torrents of the River, The Great Wall Capriccio, Meditation during Confinement in Sickness and The Galloping Battle Horses.
