Modern Chinese Woman

Description

Description

The exquisite works of master Chinese painter Qiu Shengxian are now showing at Fabrik Gallery. The selection of canvases come from two bodies of work, “Sentiment” and “Fashion Baby”, that feature the Chinese woman in oriental costume and poses a juxtaposition of inherent traditionalism and modern expressionism.

“Fashion Baby” is one of Qiu Shengxian’s most recognized series of works, created in his Shanghai studio. The figures present an elegant poise and posture with dreamy eyes, seductive red lips and elegant shaven heads – the artist challenges the boundaries between time and place, tradition and fashion. From the avant-garde aura, the viewer can appreciate the artist’s social commentary for the modern Chinese woman.

“Sentiment” advances the juxtaposition of traditionalism and expressionism seen in “Fashion Baby”, adding more fanciful elements and realist scenes, which see the structure and connotation of the painting, evolve. The viewer is confronted by Qiu Shengxian’s commentary of life values that sometimes seem at odds. At the core of the work remains the modern Chinese woman, both traditionalist and pragmatist.

The artist is exceptional in conjuring imagery that breaks the boundaries set by time and place, tradition and fashion, spiritual and material, logic and contradiction. Qiu Shengxian’s works have been shown at many successful international exhibitions and his paintings appear in corporate collections worldwide, including Siemens, H&M, Deutsche Bank and Philips. Private collectors include former Chancellor Schroeder and even a president of the United States. We are delighted to present this new collection in Hong Kong from June 10th.
