Le Nozze Di Figaro
Description
Description
First performed in Vienna, a stunning success in Prague-and one of the greatest classics in the whole operatic repertoire, this is a work combining dramatic intensity, great comedy-with the finest music ever written. The librettist is the brilliant Lorenzo Da Ponte from Vienna and the composer-Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart started on Figaro in 1785-possibly the most productive year of composing in his whole life-and wrote the opera in six months. Set in the Chateau of Aguas Frescas in Seville, Southern Spain and performed in Italian, the original plot by Beaumarchais was considered scandalous and even banned by the Emperor in Vienna on grounds of immorality. Persuasive tongues lifted the ban in time for the first performance in Vienna on 1 May 1786. The Viennese critics were overawed: “I thought the audience would never have done applauding and calling for Mozart-almost every piece was encored.”
