The Orchestra was conducted by its music director, Professor Johnny Poon, Acting Dean of Arts of HKBU, and the concert featured Chinese-born world-renowned soprano Zhang Liping as guest performer.
The concert programme included Richard Wagner’s Tannhäuser: Overture, and Tristan und Isolde: Prelude and Liebestod、 Giuseppe Verdi’s Il Trovatore: Come d’aurato…Tacea la notte… Di tale amor, Rigoletto: La donna è mobile, Rigoletto: Caro nome, La Traviata: È Strano…Sempre libera, La Forza del Destino: Overture, and La Forza del Destino: Pace, pace, mio Dio、 and also Maurice Ravel’s Boléro.
Ms Zhang Liping is one of opera’s leading international sopranos, with engagements at the Royal Opera Covent Garden, The Metropolitan Opera New York, Bayerische Staatsoper, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Teatro Regio di Parma, Opéra de Paris, Gran Teatre del Liceu Barcelona, and the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Beijing. She came to international attention for her role as Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly, which she has sung at Covent Garden, the Met Opera, Opéra de Paris, Gran Teatro del Liceu Barcelona and Deutsche Oper Berlin, among other theatres. She is currently Head of the Vocal Opera Department of Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing.
