Freespace x Edward Lam Dance Theatre: Hello, Baoyu
Variety show

Description
Description
Renowned local artists theatre director Edward Lam and choreographer Yuri Ng explore questions of identity, existence and purpose in an original re-interpretation of the novel The Dream of the Red Chamber – a multimedia experience that combines theatre, site-specific creation, immersive moving images and soundscapes, with live and digital performance.
Continuing Lam’s long-standing fascination with the classic novel, Hello, Baoyu unfolds through 12 dream sequences – contrasting the life of Jia Baoyu, the adolescent male heir of a powerful family, with his doppelgänger Zhen Baoyu. Though both share similar backgrounds, destiny has led them on different paths, with Zhen Baoyu (homophone for “real precious jade”) seeking traditional fulfilment through marriage and official status and Jia Baoyu (homophone for “fake precious jade”) following an individual search for truth. After encountering Zhen, Jia Baoyu moves from an initial place of confusion to gradual awakening, fulfilling his familial duties before continuing to seek spiritual enlightenment.
Created for Freespace, inspired by the Art Park and tailored for COVID times, the production features digital and live performances from Yuri Ng in Hong Kong and Wang Hung-yuan in Taiwan.
Note: The event has no fixed performance area and no seating.
