Composing Stories With Fragments of Time

Description

Description

The story begins with begins a letter written twenty years ago, by an anonymous Hong Kong emigrant to Australia in anticipation of Hong Kong’s return to China on July 1, 1997.

“Time flies. It has already been six months since I migrated to Australia. I now stand back from the world and live freely. However, I regret not being able to keep up with the friends I used to have back home.”

Personal stories come together in ‘Composing Stories with Fragments of Time’, the 2017 summer show at Karin Weber Gallery. The same letter is presented to eight Hong Kong artists of different generations, backgrounds and creative fields. How will the stories develop? Each artist has his or her own, deeply personal story to tell, reflecting their respective ages, life stages and gender. Their approach to this exhibition is more akin to a thought process, which involves reflecting upon themselves and their past rather than a mere response to the letter. Creativity is a prerequisite for good storytelling, and this makes artists good storytellers.
