Description
Description
Alongside with various Korea Festival events happening at Harbour City, Gallery by the Harbour is pleased to present “Archaeology of Symptoms”, an art exhibition by Korean artist Hong Ji-Yeun this autumn. This is the first solo exhibition of her in Hong Kong. 12 carefully selected paintings from the artist’s collection will be displayed at Gallery by the Harbour from 22 September to 13 October 2015.
Having a keen interest in Korean folk paintings, Hong often creates vibrant works that combine Oriental motives and Western techniques. The incorporation of these elements reflects her multicultural experiences in Europe, Malaysia and Korea, and offers new perspectives to traditional art. Acclaimed as “pop art color abstract painting”, her works present distinctive colour compositions and a unique artistic statement that attempt to draw individuals’ reinterpretation of familiar objects.
The exhibition consists of works that reflect artist’s interests in re-composition and re-assembly for the last few years. In the title, “Archaeology of Signs”, Hong uses the term, “Signs” as symbols caused consciously or unconsciously by the events, memories, experiences, and traditions surrounding herself and the images fabricated by being combined or juxtaposed, remaining as a very personal, archaeological result.
Born in 1972, Hong obtained both her bachelor’s and master’s degree in painting from Hong Ik University in Seoul. Besides paintings, she has also been creating in various art forms including sculpture, stage art and film. Her works are well received and collected by embassies and institutions such as The Korean Embassy in Madrid, Spain, The Korean Embassy in Sri Lanka, Hana Bank, Kenzo Korea, The National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, Musée d´art contemporain de Montréal, Shu Uemura New York, Naver Corporation.
