A tale of two anniversaries : Bernstein & Rossini & Ip Kim-ho

Description
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Bernstein’s birth, The Hong Kong Bach Choir presents one of his most beloved works: Chicester Psalms, commisioned by an Anglican catheral in England but setting the original Hebrew text from the Book of Psalms: a triumph of ecumenicism in the midst of the tumultuous 1960s.
2018 marks the 150th anniversary of Rossini’s death, which The Hong Kong Bach Choir commemorates with his final masterpiece, the Petite Messe Solennelle. Rossini composed it to be his ticket to Heaven – as he wrote on the final page of the manuscript, “Dear Lord, here it is, finished, this poor little mass… Blessings to you and grant me Paradise.”
The concert also includes a recent work by Hong Kong composer IP Kim-Ho, commissioned by The Hong Kong Bach Choir in 2002 to be performed alongside Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle. An Offering of Flowers dissects and reassembles the word “flower” in four languages (Cantonese, Mandarin, English, and German) in a musical mosaic that in just a few brief minutes establishes an other-worldly atmosphere.
