Sin Sin Fine Art is delighted to present “77”, a solo exhibition by French Artist Hervé Maury, from 14 January till 25 February 2010. Animals with human-like attitudes and postures have always remained a central theme in Hervé’s artworks. “My paintings represent the bestiary of a world which is unique to me. It is a world in which strength and tenderness go alongside with questionings and humor. And in my world, bears possess a telluric might, dragonflies are celestially light; dogs are philosophers and mice are mischievous.”
When looking at Hervé’s artworks, one can easily find his heart captivated by the innocent gaze of the animals. As Hervé said, “I am not attempting to do a descriptive painting, but rather to bring about a relation between the subject matter of the piece and its viewers. To that effect, my animals are staring at us, always with the same round eyes, amazed at what they see.” Hervé’s animals have also appeared in various collaboration works such as the incredible décors for French dancing companies; and in 2006, his “polar bear” series freshened up the windows of Hermès airport boutiques around the world.
Working with unusual textures has also been of interest to Hervé. “The very rich complexity of materials such as a mix of sands, marble powders, ochres and miscellaneous minerals, together with Indian ink and sometimes bright colours provide my animals and their backgrounds with all their substance.” Hervé has recently taken up a new challenge by experimenting with a surprising new technique: painting his animal series on recycled marine sails. “Using sails worn from long years at sea grant me a support to tell of a dreamlike journey where octopuses, fishes and insects happily return.”
