Description

Description

“From uncertainties to comical misunderstanding emerges a common gestural culture, the intelligence of the body.” Centre National de la Danse
The Self and The Other Series #2
1 + 1The starting point of 1+1 was the Live Arts Festival in 2007. After that, the work was further developed on the stage with an invitation from E-Side Dance Company. In 2008, a full version of 1+1 was completed in Tokyo in Morishita House under the curation of Dance Asia with support from the Saison Foundation of Japan. The piece received an invitation in 2010 from Foundation Cartier in Paris to be part of the programme of Les Soirees Nomades. In 2012, it was presented in the Kobe International Dance Festival. The creative process of 1+1, working with different presenters in the various stages of development, enabled me to learn about the feedback and reactions of a wide range of audiences in a formal manner, and then further develop my work. That was a very valuable experience, almost too good to be true, but it is also respect and care for creativity.1+1 is about collaboration, and the performance began at the moment when the two performers heard each other’s name. On the stage, the two performers continued to carry out their tasks within an established framework again and again in a most equal manner. This revealed what they thought of each other. What the audience saw was a constantly changing relationship because every word, every indication, and every reaction would affect the decision of the next step of the other person. How would we get along with the other one under such circumstances, which are as close to equal as possible ?
