“Weaving in Time” SAORI Exhibition and Fair
Visual Arts
Description
Description
SAORI* is a contemporary Japanese weaving method. It is a word combination of “SA”, which is the first syllable of “SAI” in Japanese Zen terminology, meaning everything has its own individual dignity, and “ORI” meaning weaving.
When doing SAORI weaving, weavers use a boat shuttle which is a boat-shape shuttle with two pointed ends and a thick yet hollow body which is reserved for a bunch of wefts. It is a weaving tool that help pulling and dragging the weft back and forth on the loom in order to form a SAORI cloth. While in the weaving industry, the mechanized shuttle speeds up the process, which is named “flying shuttle”.
The tool name of “flying shuttle” seems to describe the speed of weaving, as well as the trace of time elapsing. For years, the weavers with various abilities have been weaving discontinuously. Some are the beginners, some have become the experts, some are unconcerned with weaving, while some are adapting to it. However, due to the pandemic, the weavers have not been meeting each other and create together as usual. They get bored and feeling disconnected from the community.
Through this exhibition, it is time to review in 2021 by gathering all their weaving artworks created in recent three years. May their artworks reach further to you and deeper to your heart on behalf of them.
