Encounter – K11 MUSEA X WHITE CUBE

Description

Description

Encounter’ is a collaborative presentation between K11 Art Foundation and White Cube gallery. Three major works by White Cube artists are unveiled at K11 MUSEA, including Rushmore (2016) and Afro–Ikebana (2019) by Theaster Gates, and Zizaach (2016) by Ibrahim Mahama.

These works come together to explore the encounter between culture and the materials used in the creation of their works. Artists often cross different media and cultural narratives in their practice to consider how art intersects with daily life.

The works of Theaster Gates brings together objects and ideas drawn from diverse cultures and human history, as well as political and social engagement. While in the work of Ibrahim Mahama, materials from everyday life in Ghana, such as jute sacks used to transport cocoa beans, are transformed to create installations that examine themes of globalisation, migration and commodity exchange.
