Cantonese Opera Extravaganza – Night Show: “Beauty in Disguise”, Children Excerpt Performance “The Chance Meeting When Plucking the Prunes (The Reincarnation)”

Description

Description

“Cantonese Opera Extravaganza” is an annual performance of the Cantonese Opera Advancement Association (COAA) held on the 3rd day of Chinese New Year. Having overcome the hurdles this year, we hope that an extraordinary new year is coming, celebrating with delighting Cantonese opera performances!

“Beauty in Disguise”
Ye Qiuping is the daughter of the former prime minister. To avenge injustices against her father, Qiupinguses a pseudonym-Chunjiao-and serves in a marshal’s house in disguise of a silly maid. Qiuping adores the marshal’s sixth son, Meng Yi, who frequently teases her for her plain looks. When the Huns invade China, the marshal leads his troops to the frontier and Meng Yi volunteers to be on the front lines. He makes a bet with Chunjiao that he will marry her if he is defeated. Meng’s troops are ambushed, and, at a critical moment, Qiuping appears (without her disguise) and repels the enemy. Meng falls in love with Qiuping and proposes to her. Back in the camp, Meng Yi is sentenced to death for his failure in the mission. Qiuping comes and discloses her identity to the marshal, while pledging allegiance to the imperial government. She pleads with the marshal to have Meng and others to help her fight the enemy in compensation for his failure. After they succeed in defeating the Huns, the marshal commands Meng to marry Chunjiao, the maid, as he has promised. Meng marries Chunjiao reluctantly and orders his servant Dayong to spend the night with her. Fortunately, Qiuping finds out about the trick. The next day, when Meng returns to the bridal chamber,Qiuping reveals that she was Chunjiao all along and punishes Meng for his arrogance by claiming that she has slept with Dayong. Finally, with the truth out in the open, the two perform the wedding ceremony again and become a happy couple.
