Description

Born in 1980, Jean-Philippe Merckaert began his musical studies in Mons, Belgium. He graduated from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris where he studied with Olivier Latry and Michel Bouvard, and earned the first prize in organ. He also obtained his Master degree in classical composition at the Royal Conservatory of Mons.

In 2003, Merckaert took a year’s sabbatical to become the resident organist at the Sapporo Concert Hall Kitara in Japan. He has won prizes in several International Organ Competitions, including the second prize at the Gottfried Silbermann Organ Competition in Freiberg, Germany in 2007 and the second prize and Audience Prize at organ competition in Bruges, Belgium in 2009.

He has made several recordings including Belgian conductor and composer Pierre Bartholomée’s Livre d’orgue (world première) and a double CD featuring Bach’s Leipzig Chorales.

In his concerts, Merckaert performs regularly orchestral major works in his own transcriptions including César Franck’s Symphony in D minor as well as pieces by Ludwig van Beethoven, Felix Mendelssohn, Maurice Ravel and Paul Dukas, etc.

Presently living in Tokyo, Merckaert appears regularly in concerts as soloist or with orchestras all over Japan. From 2011 to 2014, he was organist at the Tokorozawa Civic Cultural Center MUSE. He is currently the resident organist at the Nasunogahara Harmony Hall and teaching organ at the St. Gregory House, Institute for Religious Music in Tokyo.
