With highlights from the Sun Yat Sen Symphonic Suite, our National Day Celebration honours the 150th birthday of one of the legendary forefathers of modern China. Sometimes called the “People’s Composer,” Xian Xinghai wrote works that vividly marry Chinese folk music with Western harmonies. The composer’s much-loved, most enduring work, The Yellow River Cantata—set to the poetry of Guang Weiran—combines the forces of a full orchestra with the addition of Chinese instruments—chorus, vocal soloists, and a speaker, all bringing this heritage work to life.
