Description
Description
The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts will present Gongs and Drums on 25 and 26 May, as a recurring series of the School of Chinese Opera and one of the programmes of the 2nd Academy Festival. The all student-performer cast will bring to the audience five distinctive excerpts of Cantonese opera, with the music accompaniment being taken up by teachers and students of the School’s Music Stream.
The five Cantonese opera excerpts in the upcoming Gongs and Drums includes ‘Bridal Chamber’ from Dragon and Phoenix Contend for Commandership, ‘Longing for the Secular World’ and ‘Descending Mountain’ from Sea of Sin, ‘Touring the Lake’ from The Legend of The White Snake and Mu Guiying’s Marriage, each with a unique style.
‘Bridal Chamber’, from maestro Dr Lam Kar-sing’s famous Dragon and Phoenix Contend for Commandership, is known for its exciting scenes as well as rich and dynamic singing. ‘Longing for the Secular World’ and ‘Descending Mountain’ from Sea of Sin draw on Kunqu performing techniques, and use props such as dusters and prayer beads to express the characters’ inner thoughts and feelings. In ‘Touring the Lake’ from The Legend of The White Snake, performers use stylish body movements to portray the love story of Xu Xian and Bai Suzhen, and to showcase the symbolic and imagery expression of Chinese opera. In the classical Mu Guiying’s Marriage, the love-hate relationship between Mu Guiying and Yang Zongbao is depicted in the form of fight scenes and operatic singing, embodying the unique feature of stylisation of Chinese opera.
The purposes of performing different repertoires are to broaden students’ arts exposure and to increase their capabilities in comprehensive performance, aiming to achieve the goal of enhancing the foundation skills of students through opera learning.
