“In two or three hundred years life on earth will be astonishingly, unimaginably beautiful. This is the life that man must have, and if it eludes him in the meantime then he must have a premonition of it, he must wait and dream and make himself ready for it …”
Olga, Masha and Irina Prozorov live with their brother Andrey in a large estate in a remote town of Russia. Compared with their educated and cultural background, this town is unsatisfyingly dull. Ever since their father, battery commander Prozorov, moved the family here from Moscow eleven years ago, the sisters have been strongly wishing to return to their city of birth.
Yet, their dream never comes true. Olga is a teacher and eventually becomes the principal of a local school. Masha marries a man she despises, but falls in love with military lieutenant Vershinin. Irina has a keen dedication for the value of work, but soon becomes disillusioned by the reality of it. When she accepts her fate and decides to marry Baron Tuzenbach, Baron is killed in a duel by his friend Solyony. Andrey marries a local girl named Natasha and they have children together. Natasha takes over the estate little by little and in the end of the play, the Prozorov family is almost completely driven out of their house by her.
The story took place a decade before the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917. Chekhov, one of the greatest writers of Russia, seemed to have felt a great storm was approaching during the time.
