Description
Beijing Fayuansi is an adaptation of Li Ao’s first full-length novel Martyrs’ Shrine: the Story of the Reform Movement of 1898 in China directed by renowned director Tian Qinxin of National Theatre of China. Recounting events of Kang Youwei, Liang Qichao, Tan Sitong, Emperor Guangxu, Empress Dowager Cixi, and centring the efforts to put the country back on its feet in late Qing, the story is told against the backdrop of Fayuan Temple in Beijing, in which a series of historical events took place between 1888 and 1927. The storyline develops around the 10 days between 11-21 September 1898, follows the meeting of Emperor Guangxu with Kang Youwei, the formation of the Hundred Day’s Reform, the gallantry of Tan Sitong and the pursuit of Western learning by Liang Qichao, telling the ethos of the people at the time.
Glance over the brutal history through the multiple viewpoints of the imperial court, the people and the temple on stage at the opportune moment for change of the gloomy, doomed country in late Qing. The patriots and the elites entangle with the nation and the fate – what is the way out for a nation at the brink of a fall
