The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Students’ Union Orchestra
HKPUSUO was established in 2004 by a group of students with a strong pas¬sion for and experience in playing classical music. Our aims are to promote classical music on PolyU campus and to provide an environment in which students with musical talent can nourish their experience of playing orchestral music. Including alumni, staff members and students, we now have about 80 regular rehearsal members.
We have remained active since our establishment giving a variety of performances including annual concerts since 2006, the President’s Reception at the University Congregation, the Donors’ Reception, and more. In 2007, we had our first collaboration with the Culture Promotion Committee (CPC) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University to perform a concert with the renowned pianist, Dr Eric Fung, under the Artist-in-Residence Programme. Beyond the PolyU, we worked with the HKUSTSU Philharmonic Orchestra at Joint-University Con¬certs in both 2009 and 2010. In 2011, we co-organised the Joint-University Charity Concert “Music Heals Japan” with several universities in Hong Kong. Being passionate as music lovers and being innovative as PolyU stu¬dents, in 2012, we held a Summer Concert jointly with The Hong Kong Poly¬technic University Students’ Union Choir.
Later in 2012, for the first time, we performed with erhu masters Professor Wang Guo-tong and Mr Ray Wong under CPC’s Artist-in-Residence Programme. In 2013, thanks to the second collaboration with the Erhu masters, the orchestra had their first appearance in the Concert Hall of Hong Kong Cultural Centre.
In the future, we will continue our commitment to fostering an interest in music within our community and to enriching our community’s musical experience.
