It has been estimated that there are more than 2000 songs set to Shakespeare’s poems or lyrics from his plays. The songs to be selected will date from Shakespeare’s own time, by such composers as Henry Purcell, John Ireland, down to Vaughan Williams and Benjamin Britten of the 20th century, interspersed with some European composers such as Schubert and Poulenc.
