Description
“My fame spreads far and wide. My fleet is all-conquering. My life is full of riches and splendours. A dream to many but a nightmare to me.”
Cheung Po Tsai was kidnapped by the notorious pirate leader Cheng I when he was young. Cheng treated him as his own son and made him as his piracy partner.
Cheung though reluctantly became a pirate leader after the death of Cheng. He was righteous to the people in the South China Sea, yet, the Qing Government fought a life and death battle with Cheung.
Determined to be loyal to his country at youth, Cheung eventually surrendered to the Qing Government. The once all-powerful pirate was given an insignificant position in the navy. Full of unspoken regrets, he chose to forget his aspiration for the great cause.
In this play, playwright Mandu skillful at the interplay of historical documentation, reality and imagination, joins Chung Ying Theatre Company and Hong Kong Dance Company to reconstruct the complicated and confusing life of Cheung Po Tsai.
