The Call from the Snowy Mountain: Kathleen Fung Yee-sing(BMus4)
The Call from the Snowy Mountain is composed for a concert of highSCORE Festival in summer 2017. The topic is inspired by the scenery of Mount Hotakadake, one of the 100 famous Japanese Mountains, reaching a height of 3,190 m. I wish to mark how I feel when I saw this scene for the very first time.
Piano Study: Wu Hou-lam(ADip2)
Rather than a study piece written for a pianist, it’s for myself to study the composition techniques I’ve learnt from the past year. The piece is written in 12-tone technique/minor 2nds and major 7ths. Different range, consonance and dissonance and different tempo are experimented in different sections of the piece.
Encourage And Courage: Ken Sham Yiu-chung(BMus4)
Go to a new place, unfamiliar personnel, feel not used to, fresh, strange… A little encouragement from others can increase courage. The composer was told in his dream that his hometown was Mars. He came to Earth with many set-backs, big and small, but at the same time he felt very fresh and interesting. In the dream, he returns to Mars and listens two folk songs sung by the villagers for him to show encouragement and courage.Does art have to be “beautiful”? Are the extremely abstract paintings and the glasses that the visitor carelessly missed out on the museum and were misunderstood as art exhibits “beautiful” ? or “weird”?From the composer’s view, sometimes works of art only need to be thought-provoking, and there may be no answer at all behind them, but the process of thinking is interesting. Art is to be able to attract and appreciate observation over and over again. To be attractive, there are other possibilities besides “beauty”, such as “eccentricity”, cause people to rethink without disgust. There are still other possibilities….
When the Last Leaf Falls: Chu Kai-yeung(BMus4)
I was inspired by the moment when the leaf falls, and would like to express my lament.
Still Life: Kyle Yip Ka-chun(ADip2)
The term “still life” is mostly used to describe motionless objects in a painting, and it can imply different meanings to it. The composition tries to express the unique tone and strong contrast with the help of the characteristics of classical guitar, depicting the hidden vitality, and the state of quietness and motion in the painting.
Singular: Lee Hoi-yan(BMus 4)
Singular is an exploration in using a singular sound source to consider how sound travels in time, and to understand the quality of the sound from various facets.
