Description
Hong Kong in the late 1970s, when the market was bullish and business was booming. Every night, the Tonnochy Night Club was jam-packed with the crème de la crème of the rich and the powerful accompanied by the most beguiling of beauties.
The story takes place in Tonnochy’s ultra-exclusive VIP Room 888, where money flows like water. Mogul Chow Sai Cheung books the room for ten consecutive nights in the hopes of pursuing Lily, the hottest hostess at Tonnochy. Chow is an overseas Chinese from Southeast Asia who has made a fortune in Hong Kong in recent years. A large real estate deal just made him a celebrity. Many of the city’s elite are keen to meet him, among them Ma Man Sing, second son of the founder of a local Chinese bank, and Ng Yuet Wah, widow of a shoe manufacturer.
Ma and Ng meet for the first time. They are in similar predicaments: Ma’s nephew Ho Wing has put the bank’s financial health in serious jeopardy; Ng’s late husband Chan Cheung Hei has died in an accident and her factory is up for sale. Their only resort is to seek help from Chow. But are they the only ones?
Hostess Lily wants to marry rich. Master Siu yearns to make a mark in business. Stockbroker Kau dreams to manipulate the stock market. Chiu Hoi Tai is intent to prove he’s still virile. Tonnochy manager Joe hopes to steal insider tips. Heung Heung must earn enough to repay her debts. Mama-san So Mei prays that the nightclub business will thrive for years to come. The denizens of Tonnochy all dream of fortune coming their way. Can Chow Sai Cheung be the answer for all of them? And what does Chow want for himself?
